The YouthBeat outreach team is a dynamic service offering hands-on assistance to young individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk in public spaces, steering them away from potential dangers. Recognized in the media for its impactful support to Perth’s youth, this program operates in Northbridge. As a part-time team member, you’ll work on a rotating roster, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights from 9 pm to 5 am. In this role, your responsibilities include providing information, referrals, and practical support, along with offering ongoing assistance to clients and their families.

This position entails supporting a 24/7 rotating roster, covering both day and night shifts throughout the week. Candidates must be available for overnight shifts on Fridays and Saturdays.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate Youth at Risk (YAR) Initiative shifts, conducting street-based outreach in the CBD and Northbridge area between 9 pm and 5 am on rostered days.
  • Provide trauma-informed, person-centered support to vulnerable young individuals, employing culturally secure and solution-focused approaches.
  • Deliver assertive outreach through vehicle and foot patrols in Perth CBD.
  • Utilize your understanding of current youth issues to connect and engage with young people on the street.
  • Collaborate closely with key external groups and case managers to ensure the best possible support for the encountered young individuals.

Your Skills and Experience:

  • Significant background in the child, youth & family and/or homelessness or AOD (Alcohol and Other Drug) sectors.
  • Confidence in support and assessment processes.
  • Degree or Diploma in Youth Work/Community Services or a minimum of three years experience in a similar role.
  • Proven assertive outreach work experience, engaging and supporting at-risk young people, including those who are intoxicated or experiencing homelessness.
  • Experience and ability to work with at-risk young people, including knowledge of child and adolescent development.
  • Strong assessment, general counseling, and crisis intervention skills, including working with individuals experiencing alcohol and other drug use issues, mental health challenges, and families in crisis.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office, with the ability to adapt Mission Australia’s web-based Information Management system (training provided).
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, including report writing and data collection.
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Full driver’s license with no restrictions.
